Social Isolation in Aged Care Facilities
Around 11% of older Australians aged 65 and above experience social isolation, while 16% of experience loneliness. According to a 2022 survey by ARIIA, the Australian aged care workforce identified social isolation as a priority issue due to its profound impact on people’s lives and well-being.
Understanding the Impacts of Social Isolation and Loneliness
Social isolation is the objective state of having minimal contact with others, whereas loneliness is the subjective feeling of lacking companionship, social connection, or quality relationships. Unfortunately, the frequency of social contact- both in person and online- has been steadily declining across all age groups in Australia for decades.
Both social isolation and loneliness are linked to poor physical and mental health. Social isolation has been associated with mental illness, emotional distress, suicide dementia, premature death, and unhealthy behaviours such as smoking, physical inactivity, and poor sleep. Loneliness has also been tied to premature death, increased psychological distress, and general dissatisfaction with life.
In aged care settings, it is crucial to foster a sense of belonging and ensure residents feel seen, heard, valued. Older adults are at increased risk for loneliness and social isolation because they are more likely to face factors such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and hearing loss.
Menarock LIFE’s Holistic Approach to Social Engagement
At Menarock LIFE, we address social isolation holistically by creating vibrant, engaging communities for our residents. Our assisted living facilities are designed to encourage social interaction, from shared dining spaces to cosy communal lounges and reading corners where residents can relax or engage in social activities. These curated spaces facilitate social engagement and create a welcoming, home-like atmosphere.
Our homes offer a concise calendar of events tailored to the interests and abilities of our residents. From group exercise sessions and arts and crafts classes to musical performances and theatre, each activity offers opportunities for residents to build connections and stay mentally and physically active. We also host gatherings, holiday celebrations, and visits to local attractions such as art exhibitions and community events, giving residents new and exciting ways to be involved in their community and interact with others across all age groups.
Support services for elderly are put in place to nurture residents’ well-being on multiple levels. These programs can include music and art therapy for cognitive and emotional stimulation, as well as pet and gardening therapy to foster a sense of belonging and bonding with neighbours and the team.
Companionship Through Shared Living
For residents who prefer or require closer companionship, Menarock LIFE offers companion suites in some of our homes. These shared living spaces help reduce feelings of loneliness and foster friendships. For residents in single rooms, our attentive staff provide regular check-ins and ensure frequent opportunities for social interaction throughout the day.

Connecting with family and friends
We understand the importance of maintaining strong relationships with family and friends. That’s why we provide comfortable lounge areas for family visits, ensuring regular contact with loved ones. These spaces offer a warm and inviting setting for residents to enjoy meaningful time with their families.
Our Staff: Companions as well as Caregivers
Our staff are more than caregivers – they are companions. A friendly face and a caring conversation can make all the difference in combating social isolation. Whether during mealtimes, a stroll around the garden, or a casual chat, every interaction is seen as an opportunity to offer warmth and comfort. Our homes are also conveniently located near parks, cafes, and other local attractions, making it easy for residents to enjoy outings and feel connected to the wider community.
Create a Sense of Purpose and Belonging
At Menarock LIFE, we believe that breaking the cycle of social isolation requires more than just providing activities – it’s about fostering meaningful relationships, offering emotional support, and instilling a sense of purpose in every resident’s life. By addressing and tailoring to the social, emotional and mental needs of our residents, we want to continue to create an environment where our residents (and staff) can thrive both personally and as part of a strong, connected community.
